Lend a hand on Sunday morning

A quiet morning of zazen runs on many small acts of care: a door opened, a cushion set out, a bell rung on time, a pot of tea afterward. In Zen this work is not a chore. It is samu, work as practice, and it is one of the warmest ways to belong to a sangha.

Where we need hands

Here is the roster for the coming Sundays. Anything still open is waiting for someone, and that someone is welcome to be you.

The open spots live on our sign-up sheet, one Sunday at a time. Take a look and claim whatever fits your week.

The roles

Each Sunday needs a few hands. Take one role or two, once a month or every week, whatever you can offer. None of it requires experience. We will show you everything.

  • Open & lock up. Arrive early to open the space, and lock up after we finish. Zendo care
  • Set up mats & cushions. Lay out the cushions, mats, and chairs before we sit. Zendo care
  • Greeter. Welcome newcomers at the door and help them feel at home.
  • Newcomer orientation. Guide first-timers through the short 8:00 orientation and how to sit.
  • Doan. Ring the bells and keep time through zazen and kinhin. Doan instructions
  • Coffee & tea after. Prepare something warm for the time together afterward.
  • Closing reset & cleanup. Wipe down, reset the room, and leave it better than we found it. Zendo care

The sheets

Two short reference sheets cover everything the morning needs. Read the one for your role before your Sunday, and keep it open beside you if that helps.

  • Zendo care Opening the space, the foyer table, the altar, cushions and chairs, and closing down afterward.
  • Doan instructions The bells, the timing of zazen and kinhin, the opening sutra, and giving back the merit.

How it works

We keep the week-to-week roster on a simple sign-up sheet. Choose the Sundays and roles that fit your life, and you will get a gentle reminder a couple of days beforehand. If something comes up, you can hand off or swap your spot anytime.
