When life is hard

Meditation for stress, grief, and hard seasons

Many people first come to sit during a difficult stretch of life: a loss, a diagnosis, a season of worry, or the plain weight of a hard year. You are welcome here, exactly as you are. Zen makes no promises, but it offers something steady: a quiet room, a place to sit down, and the company of others doing the same.

What Zen does, and does not, offer

We want to be honest with you. Zen is not therapy, not counseling, and not medical treatment, and we do not promise to relieve your stress or take your grief away. What we practice is simpler and older than that: sitting still, present with your life as it actually is, without needing to fix or flee it. For many people, that turns out to matter. Sitting regularly can loosen the grip of a racing mind and give feelings room to move. But it is a practice, not a cure, and we will never tell you otherwise.

You do not have to be okay to come

There is no state you need to arrive in. You do not have to be calm, composed, or ready. You do not have to talk to anyone or explain why you came. Our sittings are silent, so you can simply take a cushion or a chair and let the room hold you for an hour. Many people find that being quiet alongside others, without any pressure to perform being well, is itself a kind of relief.

A note, and a gentle caution

If you are in crisis, or thinking of harming yourself, please reach out to a doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line first. In the United States you can call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. Zen sits well alongside good care, but it is not a substitute for it, and there is no weakness in asking for help.

Where and when we sit

Greenville Zen Center gathers on Sunday mornings at the Cancer Survivors Park Center for Hope & Healing, 52 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601, beside the river. A short orientation at 8:00 a.m. welcomes newcomers, zazen begins at 8:15, and we finish by about 9:30. Every sitting is free. Read about your first visit, or come as you are.
