Mindfulness and Zen

Mindfulness in Greenville, SC

If you are searching for mindfulness in Greenville, you may be looking for something Zen has practiced for centuries. Zazen, the seated meditation at the heart of Zen, is the deep root that much of modern mindfulness grew from. Here is how they relate, and where you can sit.

Where mindfulness comes from

The mindfulness practices now taught in clinics, apps, and workplaces did not appear from nowhere. Their roots run back through Buddhist meditation, and Zen is one of its oldest living forms. When you follow the breath, rest your attention in the present, and let thoughts pass without chasing them, you are doing something Zen practitioners have done, on cushions, in quiet rooms, for a very long time.

How Zen is a little different

We want to be straight with you: we are a traditional Zen community, not a secular mindfulness course. The difference is gentle but real. Modern mindfulness is often offered as a technique, a tool for calm or focus or productivity. In Zen, sitting is not a technique aimed at a result. You simply sit, present and awake, with nothing to attain and nowhere to get to. Many people find this even more restful, precisely because there is nothing to achieve. If you have practiced mindfulness before, the posture and the quiet will feel like coming home.

You are welcome, whatever brought you

You do not need to call yourself a Buddhist, or hold any belief at all, to sit with us. Whether you found us searching for mindfulness, for stress relief, or for something you cannot quite name, you are welcome. A short orientation at 8:00 a.m. teaches newcomers everything they need. You can read what zazen is or plan your first visit.
